Trash Fee Information

The trash fee is intended to maintain the services that are currently provided. Those services consist of trash collection, recycling collection, newspaper and cardboard collection, brush chipping, and Christmas tree chipping. The contracted price per household for trash collection is $131.80 per unit per year. Recycling costs vary but are primarily labor. The materials collected are sold and the revenue generated is used for equipment, building, and other maintenance costs. Newspaper and cardboard collection costs approximately $400.00 per month paying the boy scouts to collect the newspaper and the container-hauling fee. We do gain some revenue from the cardboard and newspaper but this depends on the amount and the market price. January’s $200.00 hauling charge was reduced by $50.00 for newspaper paid at $20.00 per ton. Brush chipping is mostly fuel and labor. During the summer months, branches up to 2-inches in diameter are chipped every week as a service to the residents. Christmas trees are chipped once per week during January annually, and the cost is primarily fuel and labor.

During 2009, the only revenue used to offset the cost of solid waste was the sale of the trash bags. During 2009, the shortfall was almost $50,000.00. Bag sales were projected at $124,000.00 and by mid-October actual revenue from the bag sales was only $88,000.00. Tax revenue was used to fill the void. For 2010, the tax revenue could not be used to subsidize the solid waste costs since other expenses were increasing. The total projected cost of the solid waste collection in East Greenville is $178,100.00 for 2010.

Based upon the restructured fees, the following chart gives a breakdown in the difference of cost from the previous system to the new system.

  Cost Per Year
Bags Per Week

Trash Collection

East Greenville trash bags can be purchased in rolls of five (5) bags for $5.00.  You can purchase the bags at:

  1. Univest Bank - Bank & Main Streets

  2. EZ Shoppe Store & Deli, Fourth & Main Streets

  3. East Greenville Borough Hall, 206 Main Street

Bulk items are waste material that is too large for collection in a Borough bag such as furniture, small household items, etc. Residents may discard one (1) bulk item per week by placing a borough bulk item sticker on the item in plain view. These items are placed out at the same time as your regular trash.  Items that WILL NOT be taken are:

TIRES

WASHERS

DRYERS

REFRIGERATORS

AIR CONDITIONERS

FREEZERS

OTHER "WHITE GOODS"

AUTO BATTERIES

POINTS TO REMEMBER ABOUT OUR TRASH:

  1. Only four bags of trash a week per residence may be placed out for collection, not to exceed the 50 pound weight limit.
  2. All bags must be closed securely to avoid any rubbish from being distributed by animals or wind.
  3. Do not tie your trash bag to the handle of your can. This is not acceptable and may result in your trash being left behind.
  4. Trash bags must be placed out on Tuesday nights for pick up Wednesday. Trash may not be placed out before noon on Tuesday.
  5. All trash must be placed in a Borough bag.  Tying bags around receptacles is not acceptable.
  6. Keep in mind that failure to follow these rules will result in your trash not being taken away.
  7. During holidays, the schedule may change. Check the home page for information if the scheduled collection falls on a holiday.

Branch and Shrub Collection

Branches are collected and chipped between April and October each year. Monday is the scheduled pick up day. However, due to the popularity of this service, we may not complete the pick up until later in the week.

* Place branches where you place your trash.

* We can spend no more than 10minutes at any given stop.

* Stacking branches in an orderly fashion as close to the alley as possible saves pick up time. You may place smaller branches in a container to assist the crew.

* Branches must be less than 2 inches in diameter.

* We cannot remove downed trees.

*Remove all soil and dirt from shrub roots.

* No boards or lumber.
