Fire Hydrant Flushing

Fire Hydrants will be flushed each Tuesday during October. You might notice some discoloration in your water. The process of periodically “flushing” fire hydrants is an important preventative maintenance activity to insure the integrity of the water system and deliver the highest quality water to our customers.

Hydrant flushing serves the following purposes:
■Flushes sediments from mainline pipes, which enhances water quality.
■Verifies the proper operation of fire hydrants and valves.
■Aids in determining weaknesses in the water system.
■Helps to identify closed valves and weak flows in the water main.
■Verifies ample water flow for fire fighting.

As a result of hydrant flushing, residents in the immediate vicinity may experience temporary discoloration of their water. This discoloration is harmless, and generally consists of precipitates which do not affect the safety of water consumption. If you notice that your water is discolored, you can clear this issue by running your water faucets inside your home until the water clears. The water is safe to drink. If you have questions, please contact the borough at (215) 679-5194. Thank you for your cooperation.

If it does, you need to make the necessary repairs immediately. Packages of the dye tablets are available free of charge to our residents. Contact the borough by telephone, email, or the contact link above to obtain these tablets.

WATER CONSERVATION TIPS

On average, each American uses 60 gallons of water every day. You can reduce your water use by as much as 30% if you are efficient.

To reduce water use if you don't have a low-flow toilet, place a plastic bottle filled with water and pebbles in the tank to displace water. Don't obstruct the float! Don't use bricks.

Fluoride Treatment

East Greenville Borough does not add fluoride to the water system. There are currently no plans to add fluoride. Because there is some controversy over fluoridating water, East Greenville Borough does not intend to fluoridate the water unless required by state or federal law. There can be some adverse health effects to fluoride to the very young, elderly, and those with immunodeficiency disease. East Greenville Borough's goal is to provide drinking water that is safe for all our customers.
